An Evolutionary Approach to Modern Dance

At Lilburn School of Ballet, our modern dance division offers a sophisticated exploration of movement that transcends tradition. Rooted in the weight and precision of the Graham technique and the fluid, organic principles of Limón, our classes challenge dancers to utilize their core, breath, and spatial awareness in new ways.

We focus on the philosophy of contraction and release, fall and recovery, and the expressive potential of the human form. This curriculum is designed to complement classical ballet training by adding versatility, emotional depth, and a grounded athleticism to every dancer's repertoire.

Modern Dance Curriculum

Technique & Artistry

Floorwork

Students learn to move in and out of the floor with ease and grace. This module focuses on the relationship with gravity, strengthening the core, and developing fluid transitions between standing and floor levels.

Release & Flow

Emphasizing breath and efficient muscle usage, this module explores the 'release' technique. Dancers discover how to find momentum, swing, and suspension, creating a seamless flow of movement throughout the body.

Common Questions

What is the required dress code for Modern Class?

Students should wear a solid color leotard and  footless tights or leggings. Modern dance is performed in bare feet to ensure proper grounding and stability.

Is concurrent ballet enrollment required?

Generally, yes. Modern dance at our school is a supplemental technique that relies on the strength and alignment developed in classical ballet. Most levels require concurrent enrollment in an appropriate ballet division.

Can my child try a class before enrolling?

We encourage prospective students to take a trial class. This helps our instructors assess placement and ensures the student feels comfortable with the modern curriculum.

What are the age ranges for Modern levels?

Modern classes are offered starting at age 7 up through advanced teen and adult levels. Placement is based on both age and preceding dance experience.
